More than 160 chargers have been installed at the firm’s Gaydon engineering base.

Jaguar Land Rover has installed the UK’s largest smart charging facility for electric vehicles at its engineering centre in Gaydon, Warwickshire.

In total, the company has installed 166 charging points for electric and plug-in vehicles in the car park, in a move that is designed to encourage employees to switch to more environmentally friendly hybrid and electric models. It’s a decision driven in part by research showing that 40 percent of electric car charging happens at the workplace.

The new 7kWh charging stations have been installed by specialist firm NewMotion and use cloud connectivity to allow users to monitor and track charging throughout the day. The energy itself comes from renewable sources, and the employees who use it will also get smart cards that allow them to use every charging point in the NewMotion network.

Jaguar Land Rover, or JLR, is best known for its diesel-powered 4x4s and petrol-engined sports cars, but it now builds several electric and hybrid models, including the all-electric I-Pace and the plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport.

Mick Cameron, the head of e-mobility at JLR, said the move was part of the company’s plan to reduce its carbon footprint.

“It’s all part of our commitment to acting more sustainably,” he said. “Our UK facilities are already powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity and we believe the new charging points will help our employees to tread lightly on their daily commute.”

“Every new Jaguar and Land Rover model line will be electrified from 2020, giving our customers even more choice. We have already introduced a portfolio of electrified products across our model ranges, including fully electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and mild hybrid (MHEV) vehicles.

“The Jaguar I-Pace, Jaguar’s first premium battery electric vehicle, arrived in showrooms in March 2018 and has since won 55 international awards including European Car of the Year 2019. We hope that by providing a network of electric charging points to staff and visitors at our Gaydon engineering centre we can help encourage the uptake of alternative fuels amongst our employees.”

Sytse Zuidema, CEO of NewMotion, added: “As leading provider of smart charging solutions in Europe, our data shows when EV drivers are charging their car, 40 percent of the time this happens at work. Converting the parking spaces at Gaydon into the largest single site with smart charging locations provides that workplace charging opportunity to Jaguar Land Rover’s employees while our NewMotion charge card gives them access to the largest roaming charging network in Europe.”
