The new Tucson potentially won’t look like Hyundai’s other crossovers.

Sangyup Lee, the vice president of styling at the Hyundai Design Centre, is on a roll of helping to craft eye-catching designs for the automaker, including the new Sonata and Venue, and he thinks the company’s look for the next-gen Tucson could be even more electrifying.

“If you think this is exciting, you see that, you will freak out,” Lee told Motor Authority about the next Tucson’s look.

Unfortunately, Lee didn’t offer any specifics about what makes the next Tucson so striking. However, he hinted at giving each of the company’s vehicles a distinct appearance. Judging by the vastly different looks of the 2020 Sonata and Venue (see below), Lee doesn’t feel a need to maintain a close styling relationship among the company’s future products.

“I’ll put it this way: Yes, there is a consistency, but you don’t see instantly when we look at the car for the first time. When you start look [sic] closely, you discover, ‘This is a Hyundai detail,” Lee told Motor Authority about giving vehicles distinctive designs.

The arrival date for the new Tucson isn’t yet clear. There aren’t even spy shots of test mules yet, suggesting the unveiling is still a while from now. Hyundai refreshed the current model for the 2019 model year, and the changes included a major cabin refresh and improved safety tech.

Lee has been working at Hyundai since 2016. Before taking the job there, he was head of exterior and advanced design at Bentley. Earlier in his career, Lee was at General Motors, including working on the Camaro Concept Vehicle that formed the basis for Bumblebee in the Transformers film.
